Mike Cope, Soothsayer

November 4th, 2008

Cartoonist, friend, and modern-day Nostradamus, Mike Cope, has written a thought-provoking and eerily-prescient science fiction novel. The Last of the Funnies is set in a future where “newspapers have ceased production and nearly every form of art and entertainment is a digital simulation.” In his book Mike predicts the current economic crisis and bailout plan; though it wasn’t supposed to happen until 2012.

As if Mike’s fortune-telling abilities are in doubt, Editor and Publisher recently has riffed senior editor, Dave Astor, in a cost-cutting measure. Mr. Astor was responsible for covering syndication news. Recent stories have included the shrinking number of comics in newspapers and the many job loses in the editorial cartooning community.

I guess the cartooning industry has deconstructed so much, E&P feels there is no need to report it anymore.

Note to Mike: In the future please use your special abilities for good. Might I suggest a light comedy starring Berkeley Breathed as our world leader. Remember: with great power comes great responsibility.
